As I write this, we are in then middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now more than ever, it’s incredibly important to be throughly washing our hands, MANY times per day.

If you’re like me, you’ve been experiencing dry and cracking hands due to the drying ingredients that are in commercially made hand soaps. Plus the extra chemicals that they contain aren’t doing our skin many favors either.

While we can’t always choose which soap we’re using while we’re out, we can certainly choose a soap with better ingredients in our home!

In comes, this DIY hand soap that not only smells delicious, but actually moisturizes your hands so they are not left looking like you’v had them sitting directly in the sun in the dry desert.

I’ve been using this recipe for a long time now and not only does it last a long time, but it’s incredibly easy to make!

Dr, Bronners pure castille soap is the ingredient I like to use in many of my cleaning recipes. This soap is not only made out of vegetables, but is a great company to stand by.

Emanuel Bronner believes that a company should
Share the profits with the workers and the Earth from which you made it!”

According to their website*, Dr. Bronners is a Benefit Corporation and their purpose is to
-Expand public awareness of environmental and social issues.
-Make products and source ingredients that are fair trade certified and USDA organic
-Promote equitable compensation to all employees

All of this makes Dr. Bronners an excellent, sustainable company to support.

PLUS, you can find this soap in bulk at most natural foods/bulk stores. Which means you only have to purchase the container once (or use your own) and you don’t have to keep buying large plastic bottles that are only hurting the environment. An extra plus is that it is super concentrated so a little truly does go a long way!

The next ingredient that I love to use is vitamin E oil!

Vitamin E oil is both a nutrient and an antioxidant.

Dr. Manoj K. Ahuja, Fortis Hospitals, says,
Vitamin E oil is a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that can rejuvenate your skin and overall health. It encompasses a group of eight compounds that include both tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E oil in its purest form is extremely versatile. You can slather it on your skin or swallow it in a capsule."

This makes it a wonderful ingredient to add to this soap because it moisturizes your hands while nourishing the skin. It can also help heal stretch marks, make your nerves stronger, cleanse the skin, and help treat sunburns. Making this a great all around oil to keep in the house!

I also add a bit of Jojoba oil to get a great mixture of oils and benefits in! But you could use any type of carrier oil including Almond Oil, Liquid Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, or any other type you may have on hand. PLUS, we don’t want to use up all of your vitamin E oil too fast.

We finish this recipe off with a few essential oils to give it that delicious smell! Here I used Lavender, Frankincense, and Eucalyptus, but you could use any combination of essential oils you have!

A few combinations that I love are:
- Lemon and Thyme
- Bergamot, Lemon, and Orange
- Rosemary and Lavender
- Patchouli and Cedarwood
- Lavender and Geranium

DIY Moisturizing Handsoap

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/8 C Dr. Bronners Pure Castille Liquid Soap (this will depend on this size of your container)

  • 1 1/2 C Water (this will depend on the size of your container)

  • 1 TBSP Vitamin E oil

  • 1 TBSP Jojoba Oil, or any other type of carrier oil you like to use

  • 7 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

  • 5 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

  • 5 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Pour water into container. it is VERY important you do this step first as if you put the soap in first, it will cause the soap to bubble up. The amount of water used will be determined by the size of your container. The water should take up most of the space, leaving about and inch or two of space at the top for your soap.

  2. Pour in soap to container.

  3. Add the rest of the ingredients.

  4. Be sure to shake well before each use!

  5. I added a little label that says “Shake Before Use” on my soap container so guests know to do this as well :)
