Bentonite Clay Toothpaste
I love this recipe for so many reasons.
First off, it tastes delicious. Second, it keeps my teeth healthy and white. Third, I don’t have to keep buying & throwing away plastic toothpaste tubes. Talk about a triple win?
Plus, all the ingredients needed to make this recipe will last for YEARS. And most of them you can buy in recyclable containers OR can be found in the bulk section of your local natural foods store. I am able to fill up my Bentonite Clay, Baking Soda, Cinnamon, and in certain places I’ve been able to find bulk Xylitol Powder - this means I can reuse the same container over and over again and not have to toss out the container each time I need to buy more.
This recipe is also super easy to make!
All you have to do is start by mixing together all of your dry ingredients. Please note that I like to grind up my Xylitol Powder first because we found that when in natural form, the grains were too big and they hurt our gums. Grinding it down with a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle will ensure a soft mixture that will keep your gums happy (:
Once your dry ingredients are mixed well together - add the wet ingredients. Depending on your own preference will depend on how much water you add. I like mine to be extra creamy so I add a full 4 TBSP to my mixture. But play with it and add only 1 TBSP at a time. See what texture you like most.
Lastly, transfer your mixture into your preferred container. I like to use this brown jar (pictured above) that I found at my local co-op. I’ve also see them at Natural Grocers and Whole Foods, but depending on where you live your options may be different. You could also use tupperware or an old glass jar (bonus points for reusing!!).
To use, just dip your toothbrush in the mixture!
TOOTHPASTE:
INGREDIENTS:
- 3 TBSP Bentonite Clay
- 2 1/4 TBSP Calcium Carbonate Powder (found where vitamins are sold)
- 2 TBSP Melted Coconut Oil
- 2 TSP Baking Soda
- 3/4 TBSP Cinnamon
- 1 TBSP Xylitol Powder
- 1/4 TSP salt
- 2-4 TBSP water
- 20 drops Pranarom Gum Drops Essential Oil (I happen to find this at my local co-op, but you could always omit for a less toothpaste flavor OR add peppermint/tea tree/whatever you desire)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Add dry ingredients to bowl *NOTE: i like to grind down the Xylitol powder because the grains are big and it hurt our gums. You could use a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle)
2. Stir in melted coconut oil
3. Stir in lower end of water first. If still to dry and crumbly add more water 1 TBSP at a time. I added the full 4 TBSP because i like it creamy.
4. Transfer to container of choice. I found this glass jar in the bulk section of my store!
Wah-lah! Your toothpaste is ready to be used and will last at least 1-2 months depending on how many people are using it.
